Yamunotri is part of the Char Dham (along with Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath), the four most revered Hindu pilgrimages in the Himalayas. The small hilltop village centered around the Yamunotri Temple attracts thousands of devotees each year for the Chaldam Yatra pilgrimage (May to October), from Yamunotri to Gangotri and finally to Kedarnath and Badrinath. It is the starting point. Located in a narrow gorge near the headwaters of the Yamuna, the Yamunotri Temple is dedicated to its second sacred river, the Yamuna, after the Ganges. A dip in the Yamuna River is said to protect oneself from accidental death. Devotees reach the temple (approximately 3,233 meters above sea level) from Janki Chatti on foot or by palanquin or pony ride. It is a steep trek of about 3 km and takes about 3 hours.
Best time to travel: April to June and September to November.
